In 1997, with just the age of 26, Nicolas Ghesquiere was assigned as the head designer of traditional Paris maison, Balenciaga. Until then, he was not well known in the industry, but it took him less than 5 years for the rest of the world to acknowledge him as one of the most talented designers in the generation. He did not have any formal education done, but when he was still a student, he had training done completely at Agnes B. and Corinne Cobson. After the training was complete, he was assigned as one of the assistant designers at Jean Paul Gaultier at the age of 19. While working as a contract head designer in Trussardi, he worked as freelance in Balenciaga’s license collections. That was when his talent became obvious and leads him to the post of main line designer. He puts the style of architect and decorative forms against each other, and then combines the two elements to make the borderline obvious. In 2000, he receives the Vogue VH1 award, an award for the avant-garde designers. In the following year, 2001, Maison Balenciaga joins the Gucci group, and announces the bags and shoes line the same year. In 2002, they explore with new perspective by combining the men’s line and label.

1997年若干26歳のニコラス・ゲスキエールはパリの老舗メゾンであるバレンシアガのヘッドデザイナーに就任。それまで無名に等しかった彼は5年も経たない内に同時代に存在する最も才能のあるデザイナーの一人として認知される事となる。彼は正式な教育は受けていなかったが、フランスのルードンでの学生時代にアニエス・ベーやコリーヌ・コブソンで完全なる研修を行い、卒業後19歳でジャン・ポール・ゴルチェのアシスタントデザイナーの一人となる。任期付きのトラサルディのヘッドデザイナーを兼任しながら1995年以前からバレンシアガのライセンスコレクションでフリーランスとして働く。この事で才能を見出された彼はメインラインのデザイナーに抜擢される。彼は建築的なスタイルと装飾的なフォームを対比させ、更には融合させる事で境界線というものを表現する。2000年には優れた前衛派デザイナーに与えられるヴォーグVH１賞を取得する。そして2001年メゾンバレンシアガがグッチグループの傘下に入ると、同年にはバッグとシューズラインの発表。2002年にはメンズラインをレーベルと合体させ更なる世界観を見せる。
